Oil Sands: Advanced Reservoir Simulation

The opening session featured Prof. Hyundon Shin’s talk on Oil Sands Production Technology and Simulation. Oil sands — a complex mix of oil, sand, and clay — require high-temperature, high-pressure steam injection (SAGD) to reduce viscosity and improve recovery.

"Accurate prediction of how steam spreads and how the formation responds determines production performance — simulation precision decides everything."

With high initial CAPEX, prediction failure carries enormous risk, making history matching and accurate petrophysical modeling essential.

CCS, Lithium, Hydrogen — The Full Spectrum

Later sessions spanned the breadth of next-generation energy technology: SLB’s thermal simulation advances; CCS database construction and cross-border M&A trends from KIGAM and KNOC; Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) from brine; and hydrogen and unconventional resource development.

Message from Prof. Hyundon Shin

"Even in the era of carbon neutrality, unconventional resource development remains critical for energy security and key material procurement."

The workshop was a powerful reminder that the scope of energy engineering is broad, the challenges are real, and the opportunities for students and researchers are greater than ever.
